Co-founder Professor Siew Ng Pioneers in IBD Global Study Published in Nature
Congratulations to our co-founder, Professor Siew Ng, Croucher Professor in Medical Sciences at CUHK Medicine, Director of the Microbiota I-Center (MagIC), and New Cornerstone Investigator, on achieving another significant success! 🎉
Professor Ng, along with Professor Gilaad Kaplan from the University of Calgary School of Medicine, led the Global IBD Visualization of Epidemiology Studies in the 21st Century (GIVES 21) consortium. This pioneering global study on Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) synthesized data from 522 population-based studies across 82 geographical regions over the past century. The study, published in the prestigious journal Nature, highlights the four-stage epidemiological evolution of IBD and provides a roadmap for healthcare systems to manage the growing burden of this chronic condition.
IBD, which includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, has emerged as a global public health threat with increasing incidence in developing countries and rising prevalence in developed regions. The study's findings are crucial for understanding and preparing for the future impact of IBD worldwide. 🌍💪
